What is Paint Correction?

Over time, vehicles lose their shiny appearance because of oxidation, scratches, swirl marks, spider webbing and water spots. Other types of defects include holograms and etchings from bird droppings or acid rain. Paint correction is the process used by car detailers for restoring the paint to its best possible condition. The four steps involve claying, compounding, polishing and finishing. It is recommended to use a random orbital dual action polisher.

Automotive detailing clay bars remove bonded surface contaminants such as brake dust, rail dust and overspray. This step of the process allows the detailer to get rid of bonded impurities without thinning the clear coat.

Rubbing and cutting compounds should only be used when there are heavy defects. Oxidation, deep scratches, orange peel, dirt nibs and paint drips should be removed, not just filled in.

Polishing a car is where the magic happens. This step brings back the life and luster to a dull, faded or swirl-marked surface.

Paint sealants, waxes and ceramic coatings are several types of finishing products that may be used to add a protective layer and prolong the shine of a properly corrected surface.
